Train the Trainer in Istanbul

Contracted by International Maritime Organization (IMO), John and Kevin developed and presented an On-scene Commander Train the Trainer Course at the Directorate-General for Coastal Safety in Istanbul, Turkey. The workshop style course was organized by the Under-secretariat of Maritime Affairs of Turkey, in collaboration with the IMO and supported by the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF), represented by Natasha Lippens.

The purpose of this course was to facilitate the building of oil spill response prevention and preparedness capacity within Turkey and was aimed at providing selected national personnel with the background knowledge required to prepare lectures on oil spill preparedness, response and co-operation at both national and local levels. The course attracted participants from Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, the Academia and Non-Governmental Organizations.

The course provided information on issues relating to national and regional oil spill preparedness, response and co-operation, including but not limited to contingency planning, response management and organization, response policy, oil spill behaviour, fate and effects, assessment of oil spills, shoreline clean-up, transfer, storage and disposal of oil, evidence gathering and documentation, media relations, claims and compensation and termination of a response operation.
