An earthquake and a series of aftershocks shook Sumatra during a three day training course we were running on the Indonesia island. The course was being conducted near Palembang, less than 200 kms from the epicentre of the earthquake that measured 8.2 on the Richter Scale. This demonstrated one of a range of risks that are effectively managed by ConocoPhillips as the operators of the Ramba Field.
The Inland Oil Spill Response Course, delivered to 25 participants, focussed on the field’s barging operation. 11,000 barrels of oil and condensate blend is exported daily in purpose built barges along the river system to the local refinery in Palembang.
The river is inter-tidal with strong currents banked by extensive area of mangrove and other sensitive ecosystems. ConocoPhillips has a comprehensive range of equipment in place in preparation for on oil spill incident. This combined with the completion of the training course in its safe and effective operation ensures that a rapid response is possible in the event of an incident.
