John Ostergaard and Peter Taylor travelled to Istanbul as part of preparations for a major exercise. Peter was acting in his role as OSPRI Manager, whilst John has been charged with helping develop the exercise scenario. This Black Sea regional exercise, covering both oil spill and search & rescue, is named SULH 2007 and will be hosted by Turkey in Karadeniz Ereğli.
Our involvement reflects Peter and John’s very extensive experience of the Black Sea’s cooperation mechanisms and OSPRI’s desire to support the region’s development of oil spill preparedness. Our experience includes assistance with drafting of the Black Sea Contingency Plan and the supporting the development and implementation of related regional exercising guidelines. All SULH 2007 activities are being undertaken within the framework of the Black Sea Commission, in cooperation with its member States.
Three events took place in Istanbul relating to SULH 2007, i.e. an Exercise Steering Committee meeting, a seminar on the integration of international resources during oil spill response and an aerial surveillance workshop. Peter and John actively participated in all the events, making a number of presentations and directing discussions during both the seminar and workshop.
Prior to the SULH related activities, Peter attended a BSC Advisory Group meeting on behalf of OSPRI.
