Workshop on the Draft National Contingency Plan Review in Kenya

The IMO / Industry Global Oil Spill Planning Initiative is a joint initiative of the International Maritime organization (IMO) and the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA).

The aim of the Global Initiative is to assist developing countries to complete and exercise their national oil spill contingency plans and to build national capacity so that levels of emergency response can be sustained nationally and offer assistance / co-operation regionally.

Kevin O’Connell played a major role on behalf of the IMO in a National Contingency Planning workshop to review a draft of the Kenyan National Oil Spill Response Contingency Plan (KNOSRCP). The event was supported by the IMO and arranged by the Kenyan Ministry of Transport and Communications.

The 21 delegates attending the workshop represented 17 organizations from a variety of Government Ministries, marine, port and oil Industries, environmental interest groups, NGO’S, the legal profession, power generation companies and the Office of the President.

The workshop was successful in achieving the two main objectives of revising the draft KNOSPCP and advising on outstanding matter arising from the last workshop.
