National Contingency Plan Workshop in Zanzibar, Tanzania

Kevin O’Connell as the IMO’s Consultant introduced the purpose and aims of the workshop, which was to brief the delegates on IMO Conventions, in particular the OPRC 90 Convention and to update and broaden ownership of the Tanzania National Oil Spill Contingency Plan so as to improve preparedness in the event of a marine pollution incident. The event was supported by the IMO, organized by the Ministry of Communications of Tanzania and hosted by the National Authorities of Tanzania.

The outcome of the workshop was to recommence the process of drafting the National Contingency Plan by sharing the responsibilities with all those stakeholders who would have a role to play in the Plan and to encourage compliance with the provisions of the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation, 1990 (OPRC). The main objective for the delegates was to gain more knowledge on oil pollution matters to enable them to play a greater role in the future of the National Contingency Plan.

The workshop was well attended by 40 delegates from a range of backgrounds which included government officials from the ministries of Transport, Energy, Environment; Port Authorities, Police, Fire, Military, private companies, oil companies and mariners. There was full engagement by all concerned and the workshop was much appreciated.
