OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum in Prague

John Østergaard was invited to attend the final meeting of the 16th Economic and Environmental Forum (EEF), organised by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and held in Prague, Czech Republic. Peter Taylor also attended this event on behalf of OSPRI.

The Forum had a focus on maritime issues and included discussions on the need for improved oil spill preparedness in developing countries of Europe and Central Asia. Whilst OSCE has not previously been significantly involved in this field, it was recognised that they may have a valuable role, in facilitating or leveraging political awareness and engagement within national Administrations.

OSCE is considering potential activities relating to oil spill preparedness in various countries around the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, linked to existing efforts of the Black Sea Commission, the Caspian Environment Programme, the IMO and OSPRI. We are hopeful that any ensuing projects will be able to draw on John’s unrivalled experience in these regions. Peter will be able to help ensure strong links and synergies with OSPRI.
