InterSpill Conference and Spill06 Exhibition

Spill06
Alastair Darling MP opening remarks

We proudly supported the InterSpill Conference by sponsoring the event’s opening ceremony, held in London in March 2006. The Right Honourable Alastair Darling MP, UK Secretary of State for Transport, addressed an audience of over 600 delegates and exhibitors with his opening remarks. During his talk, he stressed the importance of improving safety to reduce the risk of oil spill and chemical incidents while at the same time ensuring that we are all adequately prepared for an incident. The training of personnel was mentioned as a key factor in the prevention of incidents, also for ensuring an efficient and competent response if required. The session also included a welcome speech from Archie Smith, Conference Chairman and a keynote speech from Michael Grey, Lloyds List.

Peter at the OSPRI stand

Peter attended InterSpill in his role as OSPRI Manager. This included sharing an exhibition stand at Spill 06 with IPIECA and other regional initiatives. OSPRI is being used within IPIECA as a successful model for organizing and coordinating regional oil spill preparedness. The conference provided an opportunity for Peter to attend an IPIECA Oil Spill Working Group meeting and also to catch up with many oil company representatives from his OSPRI network, as well as contacts from national governments, regional and international organizations. These contacts enabled specific progress to be made with the preparation for exercises and workshops planned in the Black Sea region.
