Pipe sections prior to welding in Georgia; during construction the pipeline is buried throughout the route |
Following the successful implementation of oiled wildlife response planning for BP in Azerbaijan, we were asked to extend our work to cover the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline operations in Georgia and Turkey. BTC is a new crude oil pipeline extending for nearly 1,800 km through the three countries. It will be a very important export route for Caspian Sea oil to world markets. Line-fill of the pipeline began in Azerbaijan in May 2005 and the first export from the Ceyhan marine terminal in Turkey is due to commence during the second half of the year.
The lending institutions who part-funded this major investment appointed independent consultants to review the whole of BTC's oil spill contingency arrangements. The Wildlife Response Plan produced by the Oil Spill Training Company was described as being 'an outstanding example of specialized planning'. BP and BTC were praised for being the first operator in the Caspian Region to develop specific wildlife response plans and 'were commended for setting a high level for others to follow'.
